In January 2020, Taal Volcano’s sudden eruption plunged the day into darkness as thick ash fell like snowflakes from a brooding sky. I remember standing there, camera in hand, the air heavy with the scent of sulfur, watching tears glisten on the faces around me—each drop reflecting not just the stark, flashing lights but also the glimmer of survival in their eyes.

Before I became a teacher, I was a video journalist, a witness to history’s raw moments. On that fateful day, driven by a mix of adrenaline and a sense of duty, I joined my colleague to document the catastrophe. We thought we were prepared, but as we approached the volcano, the world turned ominously dark. All landmarks vanished, swallowed by a thick, churning cloud of ash. “Are we driving into the end of the world?” I wondered silently, a knot of fear tightening in my stomach. Suddenly, the road disappeared entirely from view. It was like driving blind into oblivion, the ash so dense it seemed to erase existence itself. I remember thinking, “This can’t be how it ends, not here, not like this.” Just as despair started to creep in, two faint red lights pierced through the chaos. Motorcycles, carrying riders who felt like guardian angels, appeared seemingly out of nowhere. They were like beacons in the overwhelming darkness, guiding us when we were most vulnerable. We followed them closely, their tail lights a lifeline out of the ashen hell. The surreal journey through the smothering ash felt like hours. Each minute was a gift, each meter forward a victory against the looming shadow of the volcano. When we finally emerged from the thick curtain of dust, relief washed over me. We shouted our gratitude into the wind to our mysterious guides, their identities hidden behind masks and the night.

That day, what started as a mission to capture the news became a profound life lesson on human connection and the unexpected angels who appear during our darkest times. This story, more than any other I’ve reported, reminded me of our fragile existence and the incredible strength of the human spirit to persevere through chaos.
